Title: Brand Manager
As a senior member of Mississippi State's Public Affairs team, Checky Herrington develops and implements marketing initiatives that support the university's recruitment, growth and advancement goals. His responsibilities include management of brand research projects and monitoring of the school's overall marketing plan.
Prior to returning to his alma mater in his current role in February 2014, he served nearly 30 years as a marketing communications leader for Entergy Corporation, a Fortune 500 energy company serving 2.8 million electric and gas customers in the mid-South. His accomplishments include development of the company's first branding strategy, oversight of the team responsible for improving the company's customer satisfaction ratings to among the highest in the nation, implementation of a nuclear branding strategy that overwhelmingly raised public perceptions of Entergy's nuclear fleet, and orchestration of an employee campaign introducing the transformational business strategy that improved customer experiences by more than 75 percent in two years.
During his tenure at Entergy, Herrington won numerous awards, including the Public Relations Society of America's prestigious Silver Anvil Award for his work as a team member during Hurricane Katrina. Under his leadership, communications teams also earned multiple national, regional and local recognitions from such organizations as PRSA, PR Week, PR News, and Utility Communicators International.
Before joining Entergy, Herrington served in the administration of Governor William Winter where he directed the media relations effort that contributed to the successful passage of Mississippi's 1982 Education Reform Act. He has also worked as a reporter with The Clarion-Ledger.
Herrington is past president of the International Association of Business Communicators. Other professional affiliations include the Public Relations Association of Mississippi, the Southern Public Relations Federation and the Mississippi Press Association.
He holds a bachelor's degree in communication with an emphasis in marketing and public relations from Mississippi State University.
Herrington and his wife, Chellie, are the parents of two grown children and have one grandchild. They are members of Crosspoint Church in Starkville.
